If you could take a magic pill that would help you sleep better, have greater immunity to illness, higher self-esteem, decreased stress, lower blood pressure, less anxiety and depression, stronger relationships, and higher levels of optimism….would you take it?
Such a pill exists and is accessible to everyone at absolutely NO cost! You won’t find a commercial on TV marketing this magic pill. You won’t find it on the shelves of your local pharmacy. But don’t just take my word for it, you can find countless studies done on this magic pill’s effectiveness with a quick Google search. So, what is this magic pill?
Gratitude! In addition to all the health benefits outlined above, the practice of gratitude has been shown to have a significant positive impact on physical and psychological health. Psychologist Robert Emmons has found that “gratitude blocks toxic emotions, such as envy, resentment, regret, and depression, which can destroy our happiness.” He found that gratitude can have a transformative effect on people’s lives because it helps them focus on the present, plays a role in magnifying positive emotions, improves self-worth, and helps us recognize our value.
We recently asked the individuals we support at Cornerstone to complete the sentence…
“I am thankful for _________.” As expected, they had a variety of responses…but two key themes emerged. They are thankful for their families, and they are thankful for YOU, the dedicated staff who care for and support them each day. I certainly echo their gratitude for each of you who give your time, energy, talents, and heart to those we are called to support. (You can see their full list in the WordCloud below)
I think the Apostle Paul figured out this Magic Gratitude Pill long before scientists studied it…
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with THANKSGIVING let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7).
May you experience the “peace of God” as you move into this season of gratitude. May your hearts and minds be renewed as you celebrate this Thanksgiving with your family, friends, and this incredible community at Wesley Glen.
